In our seminars we always explain that scales are a must when preparing coffee. We find the information "how many spoons should I put in" or "how many coffee scoops" simply too imprecise. Especially since the dosage of your coffee has a decisive influence on the taste profile, you should not take it lightly.
Dosing coffee correctly - that's why it's important!
Coffee consists of two components: coffee and water. If the two amounts are not balanced, it can lead to major changes in taste that are actually not wanted. Too much water = mush, too much coffee powder = strong, bitter, too intense.
To avoid unpleasant surprises and to preserve the true taste of coffee , you should make sure you use the right ratio of coffee to water. Especially if you want to test different varieties, countries of origin and preparation methods, they should all be prepared in the same way. Otherwise, you may miss the original flavors of the coffee. (Here you can find the preparation methods explained - Coffee blog - Preparation of coffee )
How to dose coffee correctly - what is the right amount of coffee?
This of course varies depending on the preparation and can also be adjusted according to your taste preferences. However, we want to explain a general way to find the right amount of coffee for you!
When it comes to filter coffee, we use the following rule of thumb for dosing your coffee:
1l water to 60g freshly ground coffee
However, our rule of thumb should serve as a guideline here, which means: You start with our rule of thumb and then work your way bit by bit through trial and testing to the ideal amount of coffee for you.
Above all, make sure that you keep the amount of water constant when varying the amount of coffee.

For preparation with the hand filter, we recommend the following formula to start with:
250ml water to 16g freshly ground coffee
For the perfect espresso with the portafilter, we recommend the following quantities as a rule of thumb to start with:
Simple espresso: 7g-10g | 14 - 20ml
Double Espresso: 12g-18g | 24 - 36ml
Again: The rules of thumb mentioned above are our guidelines. Of course, everyone has their own ideas about how their coffee should taste and the dosage does vary depending on the coffee and the country in which it is grown. We hope you enjoy trying and experimenting.
