Why espresso ? Do you really need an espresso guide?
Why espresso? Well, that's a stupid question, because we love espresso! But we're not the only ones, because in Italy it's completely normal to drink espresso from 11 a.m. onwards. Not just as a ristretto, single or double - espresso is also the basis for cappuccino, latte macchiato, espresso macchiato, flat white and much more. So if you conjure up an excellent espresso in the cup, you've already done half the job for all espresso combinations with milk.
1. Roasting level & selection of beans - the Kaffeeheimat espresso guide!
First, we want to clarify how important it is to choose the right coffee beans. Your taste naturally plays the biggest role here, so you should first ask yourself what type of espresso drinker you are:
- earthy-chocolatey, mild & low in acid
- fruity, exciting, acidic
It is important to know: The lighter an espresso is roasted, the fruitier and more acidic its cup profile will be. The darker it is roasted, the more chocolatey and caramelly and less acidic its cup profile will taste. But be careful: beans that are roasted too dark and burnt no longer taste chocolatey, but bitter, burnt and oily - we strongly advise against this!
When choosing your beans, make sure that they are espresso beans and feel free to try out the differences in the country of origin, processing and, above all, degree of roasting.

2. The grind, the quantity & the brewing time of the espresso - our espresso guide!
The degree of grinding has a big influence on your perfectly prepared espresso! Depending on the preparation, your espresso can achieve a completely different taste profile just by adjusting the degree of grinding. In our beginners' seminar, we'll tell you more about coffee, degree of grinding, etc.
The following applies: the shorter the processing time, the finer the grinding.
Since an espresso has a short extraction time of 20-25s, it should be ground finely.
Our tip:
Simple espresso: 7g-10g
Double espresso: 12g-18g
To keep the perfect preparation as easy as possible for you, we keep the quantity constant and only vary the amount of water to adjust the taste profile.
The dosage of coffee and water plays a crucial role. We generally recommend a ratio of 1:2 - as a starting point for a double espresso, for example, 14g finely ground coffee and 28ml water.
If you want a stronger espresso , you would only use 24ml of water; if you want it to be lighter, you would use around 32ml of water. This way you can experiment as much as possible and find out which coffee you enjoy with which formula.
3. Espresso Guide: How to prepare the perfect espresso!
Now that we have clarified the basics, we will guide you step by step to the perfect espresso enjoyment in your cup - with the portafilter:
- Preheat espresso cup with hot water
- Grind whole espresso beans
- Fill the portafilter with the coffee grounds
- Distribute the coffee grounds evenly in the portafilter
- Press the ground coffee into the portafilter – the so-called tamping
- Drain water from the brewing group
- Hang the filled portafilter into the brewing group
- Place pre-warmed cup under the portafilter
- Start espresso preparation by pressing a button
Of course, this also applies to a double espresso . We generally only make double espressos because the extraction time and the space in the sieve affect the taste and this creates softer espresso profiles that our customers like better. Here too, the extraction time of 20s-25s applies. In addition, you can use a scale to see how consistent your espresso amount is.
Making a really good cup of espresso requires patience, perseverance and experience. So don't give up the first time, practice, practice, practice. At our barista seminar you will learn more about making the perfect espresso - so come along and we'll practice together! The number of participants is limited so that there is enough time for everyone individually and the learning effect is maximized.
We look forward to seeing you!
