Coffee roasters & Hamburg - an incredibly good combination, but why is that? We'll tell you and also tell you what really makes a good coffee roaster!

Why are there so many coffee roasters in Hamburg?

This is of course because Hamburg is one of the largest and most important coffee trading centers in the world, and has been for over 200 years. With our country roastery, we therefore have the advantage of being able to enjoy short transport routes. For this reason, master roaster Erik Brockholz also personally collects a few sacks of coffee from the warehouse every now and then.

The short distances also ensure that coffee roasting is more climate-neutral, as long shipping routes can be avoided.

What makes a good coffee roaster?

First and foremost - good coffee! But we are much more interested in the process by which this good coffee is produced and how you can recognize a good coffee roaster. What the quality management looks like, how the import takes place, what the relationship with the coffee farmer is like - these factors are certainly not apparent to customers and guests of a coffee roaster at first glance.

First and foremost, you can tell a good coffee roaster by the taste of the coffee - so try as many different coffees as possible when you visit a new roaster. We have created a short checklist to help you judge roasters even better and what you should look out for!

Our tips:

1. Watch your coffee being prepared - this is where you can tell whether it is done professionally. Maybe ask a quick question about the coffee to see if your barista can give you some information.

2. Order a variety of coffee products - including filter coffee. Filter coffee is the best way to tell what quality the green coffee is and how well it has been roasted.

3. When enjoying your coffee specialties, pay particular attention to the taste. Also focus on possible flaws in the taste profile: woody notes, little complexity in the taste, sour, bitter, long-lasting & drying feeling in the mouth - there are some taste notes that will tell you pretty quickly what quality your coffee has.

4. When doing your test, you should try a variety of coffees with different preparations and countries of origin. These all have different roasting profiles - so you can tell from the taste to what extent these roasting profiles were created and roasted individually.

Don't hesitate to ask for further information. How is the coffee imported, is there regular quality management and how is the coffee farmer selected?
