Preparing coffee & espresso with the Aeropress

The Aeropress is generally classified and categorised as a brewing method for filter coffee. However, the Aeropress can be used for a variety of different preparation methods and recipes for coffee preparation. For this reason, there is also the World of Aeropress, which awards the champion of Aeropress preparation and the tastiest recipe once a year!

When making coffee with the Aeropress, there are various factors that can be adjusted to influence the taste of the cup profile. It is of course possible to make espresso with the Aeropress - we will explain what you need to pay attention to!

How to influence the taste of the Aeropress - our tips!

The grinding level: There are almost no limits to the grinding level on the Aeropress. Basically, anything from fine to coarse is allowed. You just shouldn't grind your coffee beans too finely, otherwise it will be almost impossible to press them down through the compact coffee grounds. But feel free to experiment and discover how it affects the taste.

The filter paper: There are single filters, double filters & permanent filters - the choice is yours! If you use normal filter paper, rinse it with hot water beforehand to remove the paper taste & improve extraction.

The water temperature: The water temperature is usually between 80°C - 96°C & depends on both the coffee and your preferred cup profile! Make sure that you never use completely boiling water, otherwise you will "burn" the coffee powder when pouring & you may taste burnt notes in the cup profile.

The brewing time: You can choose this freely and it is almost purely a question of the taste you want to achieve. There are numerous recipes here that also work with longer breaks and different stirring techniques during preparation - please contact us if you would like to find out more about this.

Normal preparation & reverse preparation: Here, too, you are welcome to try both variants and choose your favorite - we mostly work with the reverse preparation in order to specifically control the extraction time.

This is how you can make espresso with the Aeropress!

In any case, you should be aware that when you prepare espresso with the Aeropress, you will not find any crema in the cup - this is developed by the pressure when preparing it with the portafilter! Although the Aeropress is more suitable for filter coffee & specialty coffee, you can of course also use it to prepare espresso.

Our tip for making a good espresso with the Aeropress:

1. Use a darker roast - we generally use darker roasts for espressos, especially with the Aeropress you should also make sure to use an espresso or omni-roast roast

2. Grind level - to develop an intense cup profile, you should choose a fine grind. This increases the extraction & gives you your desired espresso cup profile

3. Extraction time - feel free to experiment! For an espresso with the Aeropress, we recommend an extraction time of 60 seconds (long extraction for intense aromas)

4. Water temperature - use a temperature between 92°C - 95°C.

5th method - we recommend the inverted method to better control extraction time & development of the cup profile.

The invention of the Aeropress:

In 2005, it was the American Alan Adler - a scientist with a penchant for good coffee. He was annoyed that it was impossible to brew just one cup of coffee from a coffee machine. He also wanted a "coffee machine" that he could take with him everywhere - so he invented the Aeropress.

Thanks to the slow coffee movement, its willingness to experiment and its wide range of applications, the Aeropress has become an indispensable part of today's coffee world.
