No other country has had such a lasting impact on global coffee culture as Brazil. The South American nation, known for its breathtaking landscapes and pulsating rhythms, also has an unmistakable influence in the world of coffee. After all, Brazil has been the largest coffee exporter in the world for 150 years and this tradition leaves its mark. Nevertheless, the coffee farmers, especially our partner the Andrade family, have managed not only to keep the quality of Brazilian coffee high, but also to reinvent it. This means that coffee from Brazil can easily keep up with all specialty coffee growing regions! Let's delve into the fascinating world of Brazilian coffee and discover why these beans are so valued around the world.
The diversity of growing areas in Brazil
Of the 26 states in Brazil, 17 (!) are coffee-growing regions. A full 98% of the total green coffee yield comes from the regions of Sao Paulo, Espirito Santo, Paraná and Minas Gerais - here various coffee varieties thrive in abundance.
In 2019, Brazil accounted for an astonishing 36.8% of the world's coffee harvest. That equates to an impressive 62.9 million 60 kg bags of coffee - an incredible amount. These figures reflect not only the size but also the quality of the Brazilian coffee harvest.
A global phenomenon – coffee from Brazil appreciated worldwide
From the domestic market to the continents, both large industrial roasters and small traditional coffee roasters value coffee from Brazil. The main buyer countries are the USA, Germany and Italy, but coffee is also enjoyed in Brazil itself.
The coffee trees that produce these precious beans thrive both as monocultures and in mixed cultures. In monoculture, cultivation focuses on a single plant species - here exclusively coffee - also known as pure culture. But mixed culture also has its place, in which various crops, such as banana trees, avocado trees or orange trees, grow alongside coffee on the same area. The government has now made this method of cultivation compulsory for a certain proportion of farmland! This is intended to protect native animal and plant species.
Harvesting, a crucial step in coffee production, is done by hand, semi-mechanically and mechanically. This variety of methods contributes to the quality and uniqueness of Brazilian coffee.
The journey from the plantation to the cup
From the port cities of Santos, Vitoria, Rio de Janeiro, Paranagua and Salvador, Brazilian coffee is shipped all over the world. These strategic ports are the gatekeepers of the global coffee trade and help transport the delicious Brazilian flavors to every corner of the world.
But behind these impressive facts and figures are people who grow their coffee with passion and dedication. We are proud to maintain a special relationship with our Brazilian farmers, especially Ismael Andrade and his family. Together with his brother Eduardo and his son Romulo, they are continuing to expand their family business and are responsible for the outstanding qualities that characterize their coffee.
